René d'anjou (1409-80). Count of Provence, claimant to several thrones, magnificent patron of the arts, ‘le roi René’'s own works are a Traité de la forme et devis d'un tournoi (c.1444), a handbook of tournament ritual, and two allegories: the Mortifiement de vaine plaisance (c.1453), and a lover's progress, Le Livre du cuer d'amours espris (c.1460).
