Renata

Renata (Prokofiev: The Fiery Angel). Soprano. Since she was a child, she has been visited by a protecting angel. It disappeared when she grew up, but she thought her lover, Heinrich, was the embodiment of the angel. He deserted her after a year and she is searching for him. She enlists Ruprecht's help. When they meet Heinrich, the men fight a duel and Ruprecht is injured. After nursing him back to health, Renata enters a convent to atone for her sinful behaviour. She corrupts the nuns with her story of the angel and is sentenced to death. Created (1954) by Lucienne Marée; (1955) by Dorothy Dow.
