Camus, Renaud (b. 1946). French novelist and essayist. He is an outspoken supporter of gay rights; in his reflections on homosexuality, particularly Notes achriennes (1982), he evokes the relativity and subjectivity of sexual identity. His ‘novels’ began with experiments in polyphonic writing and collage (e.g. Passage, 1975; Été, 1982), but moved towards more traditional narrative with the pseudo-historical novels Roman roi (1983) and Roman furieux (1986). His works do not, however, observe conventional generic boundaries, moving freely between autobiography, critical essay, and fiction.
