An early meaning of this word, 'the surrender of a place or person', has been revived in the sinister context of political euphemism. At the start of the 21th century we have been made dramatically aware of extraordinary rendition, the practice of transporting terrorist suspects to places where they can be interrogated with fewer constraints than those applying by law in the transporting country. The term dates from the 1980s.
