radiation physics [roentgen equivalent physical] An obsolete unit of absorbed dose of radiation, being a generalization of the roentgen to accommodate particulate as well as electromagnetic ionizing radiation, and to apply to other materials besides air, biological tissue being the prime but not exclusive interest. It is equated for other ionizing rays in air with the roentgen in terms of energy per unit mass, = 8.38~ × 103 Gy. For tissue, it is adjusted with volumic mass, to range from 6.5 to 100 mJ·kg-1 (the latter being bone), with a typical value near 10 mJ·kg-1. It has also been called the tissue roentgen and equivalent roentgen (er).
