Requiem Canticles

Dictionary of Dance: Requiem Canticles

Ballet in one act with choreography by Robbins, music by Stravinsky, and lighting by R. Bates. Premiered 25 June 1972 by New York City Ballet at the State Theater, New York, with M. Ashley, S. Hendl, B. Wells, and R. Maiorano. This abstract setting of Stravinsky's 1966 score was later revived for the Royal Ballet (1972) and Munich State Opera Ballet (1974). Balanchine also choreographed a ballet to the same score in 1968, dedicating one performance to the memory of Martin Luther King.
