Former mining village 6 m. NE of Neath on the B4434. Bert Lewis Coombes (1894–1974) came here from Madley, Herefordshire, in 1912 and spent the rest of his life in the village, working as a collier in the local pit. His first book, These Poor Hands (1939), was praised by J. B. Priestley and Cyril Connolly and is generally considered to be among the most authentic accounts ever written about mining. Encouraged by John Lehmann, the author went on to write Those Clouded Hills (1944) and Miners’ Day (1945), both of which describe the harsh conditions prevailing in the mines of South Wales during the years between the world wars.
