respect for persons

A key concept in Kantian moral philosophy. Respect is due to every rational being, and so must be distinguished from liking, or admiration, or even esteem. It is best understood through what it forbids, which is treating a person as a mere means to an end of one's own: ignoring their personhood or their humanity. See also rights.
