In securities underwriting, the number of units allocated to a participating investment banker (Syndicate member) minus the units held back by the syndicate manager for facilitating institutional sales and for allocation to firms in the selling group that are not also members of the syndicate. 1. power to retain; capacity for retaining; the inherent property of a restoration to maintain its position without displacement under stress; results from close adaptation of the restoration to the prepared form of the tooth, usually aided by cement. n 2. term relating to the provision in cavity preparation for preventing displacement of a restoration. Retention supplements resistance form and is specifically created to resist any lateral or tipping force that may be brought against the restoration during and after its insertion. n 3. resistance of a denture to removal in a direction opposite that of its insertion; the quality inherent in the denture that resists the force of gravity, adhesiveness of foods, and forces associated with the opening of the jaws. n 4. the period of treatment during which the individual wears an appliance to maintain the teeth in the desired position.

 
Architecture: retention


1. The withholding of a portion (usually 10%) of a periodic payment to a contractor, by prior agreement, for work completed. The retention is held in escrow for a stipulated time period after the acceptance of the completed work by the architect and owner/payee.
2. The amount of preservative, fire-retardant salt, resin, etc., retained by treated or impregnated wood.


 

The maintenance of learning so that it can be utilized later, as in recognition, or relearning.

 

The process of holding back or keeping in a position, such as persistence in the body of material normally excreted. See also retained.

For practical reasons, most news servers have different categories for different classes of postings: for example, the "announce" newsgroup for the ISP or other agency providing the news server may retain postings either for a very long time or indefinitely, whereas postings in binary newsgroups are usually not retained for long due to the storage requirements involved.
  6. In the United States court system, judicial retention is a process whereby a judge is periodically subject to a vote in order to remain in the position of judge.
  7. In organizations, keeping personnel within the organization from departing.
