the time taken by a compound to traverse the length of a gas-liquid chromatographycolumn. The retention time is a characteristic of each compound under defined conditions. It can be used to aid in identification within a series of homologues, e.g. fatty acids, which are characterized by their carbon numberderived from the retention time.
