Inflammation of the retina. Occurs in association with many viral infections, particularly canine distemper, scrapie, classical swine fever (hog cholera) and rabies.

  • neurotrophic r. — caused by infection such as canine distemper virus.
  • r. pigmentosa — a group of diseases in humans, frequently hereditary, marked by progressive retinal atrophy, attenuation of retinal vessels, and clumping of the pigment, with contraction of the field of vision. See progressive retinal atrophy.
