(abbr. : RXR) or retinoic acid orphan receptor

a nuclear receptor that binds more tightly to other retinoids than to retinoic acid. Three isoforms (α, β, and Γ) are known. Phytanic acid binds to all three. Retinoid receptors form heterodimers with RARor with PPARs, and are widely distributed in brain and spinal cord.
