Biography

With an ironically titled single "New Era," hip-hop revivalists Retro Kidz hit the scene in 2008 with the shared goal of bringing back the style of two decades prior. Taking the stage in Gumby hair styles, dookie rope chains, Nike Force sneakers, Africa medallions, acid-washed denim, and brightly colored gear that could have come from the wardrobe closet of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, the Brooklyn collective got their big break when "The Funk Phenomena" producer Armand Van Helden took notice of their retro look (particularly their hightop fades) and invited them to star in a '90s throwback video for his song "I Want Your Soul." The shoot established a relationship between the group and Van Helden, who offered to produce their debut single, "New Era," a cut that fittingly sampled 1990s radio staple Snap!'s "The Power." Brobot signed the nine-piece, which consisted of rappers/dancers Kool Kid, J $mooth, Sur Fresh A Lot, Joe Ski, Skytel 88, Lucky '80s, Ill Will, and 1st Lady, just as the group started generating a buzz and making plans for a future clothing line. ~ Jason Lymangrover, All Music Guide
