Review

Brazilian percussion is moving more center-stage owing to a growth of Afrocentric consciousness, and the heart of the movement are the bloco afro groups from Bahia. Thanks to Paul Simon, Bahia-based percussion heavies Olodum are the best known of the Bloco Afro carnival groups that blend rootsy drumming with a conscious involvement in other Afrocentric musics. Aside from the sax of the group's leader, this sampling from their four first Brazilian albums is drumming all the way. ~ John Storm Roberts, Rovi
