French family of musicians. Jean-Baptiste Rey (i) (1734-1810) was a prominent opera conductor. He served at several provincial theatres and from 1776 at the Paris Opéra where he directed works by Gluck; in 1779 he became master of the musique de chambre at the French court, and he sometimes conducted at the Concert Spirituel. His works include an opera and arrangements of other composers' operas. His brother Louis-Charles-Joseph (1738-1811), a cellist at the Opéra, composed stage and instrumental works. Jean-Baptiste (ii) (c1760- c1822), possibly a son of Louis-Charles-Joseph, was an organist and theorist.
