Rhode Island Almanack

1736The Rhode Island Almanack. Following her husband's death in 1735, Anne Smith Franklin assumes sole control of the first paper in the colony and uses the pseudonym Poor Robin; thus, the publication is also known as Poor Robin's Almanack. By 1738, Franklin would be writing the material for the paper herself and assuming the responsibilities of a master craftsman by training her two daughters as typesetters and shopkeepers--all highly unusual events for the eighteenth century.
