| 1736 | The Rhode Island Almanack. Following her husband's death in 1735, Anne Smith Franklin assumes sole control of the first paper in the colony and uses the pseudonym Poor Robin; thus, the publication is also known as Poor Robin's Almanack. By 1738, Franklin would be writing the material for the paper herself and assuming the responsibilities of a master craftsman by training her two daughters as typesetters and shopkeepers--all highly unusual events for the eighteenth century. |
