Route 5 is a state highway in the U.S. state of Rhode Island.

Route

Route 5 takes the following route through the State:

• Warwick: 2.9 miles; U.S. Route 1 to Cranston city line
  • Greenwich Avenue and Lambert Lind Highway
• Cranston: 4.9 miles; Warwick city line to Johnston city line
  • Oaklawn Avenue and Atwood Avenue
• Johnston: 6.0 miles; Cranston city line to Smithfield town line
  • Atwood Avenue, Greenville Avenue and Sanderson Road
• Smithfield: 5.7 miles; Johnston city line to North Smithfield town line
  • Sanderson Road, Cedar Swamp Road, Pleasant View Avenue and Farnum Pike
• North Smithfield: 6.5 miles; Smithfield town line to Massachusetts State line at Central Street
  • Farnum Pike, Douglas Pike, Greenville Road, Providence Pike, Railroad Street, Main Street, North Main Street and Central Avenue

A trip along Route 5 gives the traveler a view of a high-traffic commercial corridor through Warwick, Cranston and Johnston while also providing a view of beautiful rural communities in northern Rhode Island.

Route 5 becomes an unnumbered road in Massachusetts. However, the northernmost Route 5 shields are at Route 102, at the south end of the Route 146A concurrency, so to the public it appears to end at other numbered State Highways.

Route 5 crosses Route 2 at the Meshanticut Interchange.

Route 5 was once numbered Route 1C along the 3.0 miles (4.8 km) between its south end at U.S. Route 1 (New England Interstate Route 1 before 1926) and Route 2 (originally Route 1A). It was renumbered Route 5 and extended north by 1934.
