rhomboids |
Two rectangular muscles, the rhomboid major and rhomboid minor, in the upper back between the backbone and the shoulder blade. The rhomboids have their origins on the sixth and seventh cervical vertebrae, and their insertions on the inner border of the shoulder blade. They act together and with the trapezius to ‘square’ the shoulders; they rotate the scapula so that the glenoid cavity rotates downwards, as when the arm is lowered against a resistance (for example, when paddling a canoe); and they also stabilize the scapula.
