Rhotacization

Wikipedia:

Rhotacization

(disambiguation)

Rhoticisation can refer to two processes in linguistics.

  • It can refer to R-colored vowels
  • It can also refer to the process where a /z/ sound is turned into a rhotic. This change happened in the North and West Germanic languages and Latin, at least. It is the origin of s~r alternations in words such as 'was' and 'were', where the formerly intervocalic /s/ in 'were' was pronounced [z].
