Rhymed office

Music Encyclopedia:

Rhymed office

The rhymed office or historic refers to a liturgical text drawn from the historical books of the Bible. Historical narrative, usually based on the life of a local saint, characterizes most later offices, the musical items of which (mostly antiphons and responsories) are provided with rhymed and metrical texts. One of the earliest not dedicated to a saint, that of Trinity Sunday, also gained general and lasting use. Rhymed offices, like sequences, were widely used and composed until the 16th century; they possibly influenced the rhymed and metrical sacred paraphrases of the Renaissance.
