Review

Trombonist Max Collie was born in Australia but relocated to England in 1963. A fine trad player, he has led Dixieland-oriented combos ever since, usually under the name of the Rhythm Aces. In 1974, while visiting Atlanta, he recorded four albums of material which have been reissued by the GHB label on four CDs. Volume 4 features the pianoless sextet (with trumpeter Phil Mason and clarinetist Jack Gilbert) jamming on such numbers as "Ole Miss Rag," "The Entertainer," "Nobody's Sweetheart," and "Original Dixieland One-Step." Although there are few surprises, the music has plenty of drive, spirit, and joy; easily recommended to fans of New Orleans jazz. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
