The critics just didn't get it. Ivan Doroschuk and his Men Without Hats co-horts had a keen sense of humor, and they used it well. Their music, although seriously executed, was a fun and enjoyable experience, with its spacious production and aural sound effects. Doroschuk's lyrics were witty, sarcastic, and cynical, hiding meanings behind the smirks. I'm certainly not insinuating that he was a political activist planting subliminal ideas into the youth of the '80s, but he wasn't a lamebrain either! No, I have no idea what "The Safety Dance" was about, nor do I care. I just know that it's a great pop song from MWH's debut album Rhythm Of Youth (the yellow one). Filled with stellar college radio classics like "Living In China," "I Got The Message" and "I Like," their debut remains their best-loved release. Though it didn't sell as well, their second full-length, Folk Of The '80s, Pt. 3 was equally entertaining. Doroschuk delivered another batch of catchy, singalong, synth-pop, although the eight-minute "Mother's Opinion" goes on for way too long. The radio favorite "Where Do The Boys Go?" may be the most recognizable song here, but "Messiahs Die Young" and "Unsatisfaction" are as good, if not better. Thankfully, both albums fit on one shiny CD, so fans can enjoy both albums in digital splendor. If only their sense of humor had translated better, then the band would be better remembered than they are. There is only one legitimate hit on this CD, but there are over a dozen 'should-have-been' hits waiting to be rediscovered. ~ Stephen SPAZ Schnee, All Music Guide
