Review

The Mande peoples, who live in parts of several Sahelian countries, have a particularly rich griot-based musical culture. Westerners are particularly aware of Manding kora and balafon playing, but the music of the djembé or jembe drum has also achieved some status (Paris is said to have at least several hundred non-African players, serious or dilettante). Drame's shows and recordings have had a good deal to do with that. This excellent late-'70s album was the first to introduce him to Westerners. ~ John Storm Roberts, Original Music, Rovi
