Island in Venice, containing the old mercantile quarter of medieval Venice. The Rialto Bridge, completed in 1591 and lined with shops, crosses the Grand Canal between Rialto and San Marco islands. It gives its name to lively commercial zones including the theater district of central Manhattan, New York City.
