Manufactured by Novartis

A proprietary combination of artemether and lumefantrine (antimalarial drugs derived from Artemisia (wormwood) species), used for the treatment of falciparum malaria. It is available as tablets on prescription only.

Side effects:
include abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, cough, headache, sleep disturbance, arrhythmias, and 'pins and needles'.

Precautions and interactions with other drugs:
Riamet should not be taken by people with a history of arrhythmias or congestive heart failure or by breastfeeding women. It should be used with caution in people with liver or kidney disease, in pregnant women, and in combination with other drugs that may cause arrhythmias or have other effects on the heart. These include anti-arrhythmic drugs, other antimalarial drugs, macrolide and quinolone antibiotics, antidepressants, antipsychotics, imidazole and triazole antifungal drugs, sotalol, metoprolol, and cimetidine.
