(rēbā') , 1922–97, Brazilian anthropologist, statesman, and author. An expert on the indigenous peoples of Brazil, he wrote many books, notably the six-volume 1960s work, Studies of the Anthropology of Civilizations. Ribeiro served briefly in the cabinet of President João Goulart, fled to Uruguay after the 1964 military coup, and returned a decade later. His novel Maíra (1978, tr. 1983) concerns the conflict between the native Amazonian and European components of Brazilian society.

Darcy Ribeiro (October 26, 1922 - February 17, 1997) was a famous Brazilian anthropologist and politician.

He studied for a long time many different Brazilian aboriginal groups, and wrote important works about Brazilian cultures and racial groups. His most famous work is called O Povo Brasileiro, which is a synthesis about the formation of the Brazilian society.

He was also Minister of Education in Brazil, during 1961 through 1964 and the founder of the University of Brasília, one of the most important Brazilian universities.
