Columbia Encyclopedia: Mitja Ribičič
Ribičič, Mitja ('tyä rĭbĭchĭ'ch), 1919-, Yugoslav politician. He participated in the revolutionary student movement and joined the Communist party in 1941. He was a member of the partisans of Josip Broz Tito in World War II. After the war he served as a member of the executive council of Slovenia, as a deputy of the Slovenian parliament (1951-63), and as a deputy of the federal parliament (1963-67, 1969). Ribičić served as president (1969-71) of the federal executive council, a position equivalent to that of premier, and as president (1982-3) of the Yugoslav Communist party.
