Ribu

Wikipedia: Ribu

A Ribu is a mountain or volcano in Indonesia with a topographic prominence of 1,000 metres (3,281 ft) or more [1]. There are currently a total of 118 such peaks across the Indonesian archipelago. Some are popular hikes, such as Mount Rinjani, Mount Semeru, and Mount Kerinci, while others are much more obscure and some do not even have official names. Some famous Indonesian mountains, such as Mount Bromo and Tangkuban Perahu, are not Ribus because they are connected to higher peaks by higher passes and therefore do not achieve enough topographic prominence. However, there is a subsidiary category of "Spesial" peaks which contains those which are deemed of such significant interest that they merit inclusion, albeit subjectively, in a secondary list.

The term "Ribu" is derived from the Indonesian word "ribu" meaning "thousand" and reflects the fact that in order to qualify as Ribu a peak must have one thousand metre prominence. There are three categories of Ribu, according to the absolute height of the peak. The "Sangat Tinggi" (Indonesian for "very high") category is for peaks over 3000 metres high, "Tinggi Sedang" (Indonesian for "medium height") for peaks between 2000 and 3000 metres and "Kurang Tinggi" (Indonesian for "less high") for peaks with an elevation of between 1000 and 2000 metres. Currently, 118 Ribus have been identified and there are 19 Spesial peaks.

The list of Ribus was compiled by Andy Dean and Daniel Patrick Quinn. As of November 2009, nobody has completed the list.
