Biography
Based in Mobile, AL, rapper Rich Boy (born Maurice Richards) didn't enter the music industry until after he enrolled as a mechanical engineering major at Tuskegee University. Before then, he did music in his spare time, but eventually dropped out of school and released some independent material that caught fire locally. Producer Polow (Ludacris, Jamie Foxx, Fergie) was impressed enough to have the MC flown into his base in Atlanta, where the two worked on furthering the progress. Rich Boy landed a contract with Interscope and began working on his first album. In the meantime, he appeared on one of Ludacris' Disturbing tha Peace compilations and dropped in on a handful of mixtapes -- including DJ Ideal and Jermaine Dupri's Da Bottom, Vol. 5. With DJ Drama, he released the Bring It to the Block mixtape in late 2006. His official, self-titled debut was released during March 2007. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
Richards dropped out of his studies of mechanical engineering at Tuskegee University in order to concentrate on music.[2] With a few demo releases, he was noticed by producer Polow da Don (who had already produced numbers for Ludacris, Jamie Foxx and Fergie). Rich Boy then signed a contract with Zone 4 through Interscope Records and started to work on his debut album. In the meantime, he made guest appearances on one of Ludacris' Disturbing tha Peace compilations and on a few mix tapes, such as Comeback Season by Canadian rapper Drake and Da Bottom, Vol. 5 by DJ Ideal and Jermaine Dupri. On March 13, 2007, Rich Boy released his self-titled debut album and with the success of his hit singles "Throw Some D's," "Boy Looka Here," "Good Things," and "Let's Get This Paper," the album went on to be certified Gold by the RIAA.[3]
His second album was thought to be entitled 5 Million, but Rich Boy said in an interview that the first single will be released in the summer and the title will be "Buried Alive". Rich Boy's sophomore album Buried Alive will be released in the first quarter of 2010. He recently released a single "Top of the World", part of the More Than A Game soundtrack album. He has been releasing successful mixtapes such as Bigger Than The Mayor, Paccman, and Kool-Aid, Kush and Convertibles and has made several appearances on other artists' work. His latest singles are "Drop", "Hataz", "It's Over", "Top Of The World", "Celebrity" and "We Like It" featuring Rico Love.
