Biography

Addinsell studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music before an extended period of study in Berlin and Vienna. He began writing for film during a visit to the USA in 1933 and continued throughout his career. His film scores include A Tale of Two Cities in 1958 and The Prince and the Showgirl in 1957. He is best known for the piano concerto the Warsaw Concerto, a one movement work in the style of Rachmaninov which was played in the film Dangerous Moonlight, 1941. His scores for Fire Over England, Scrooge, South Riding and Blithe Spirits were collected into the appropriately titled Film Music, which was re-issued in 1999. ~ Lynn Vought, All Music Guide
