Biography

The works of Richard Allison are entitled "The Psalmes of David in Meter," and "An Howres Recreation in Musick." He also contributed harmony to Thomas East's "Whole Booke of Psalmes" with the melodic line carried by the tenor. Allison's expression and influence can also be found in Thomas Morley's "First Booke of Consort Lessons" specifically in the more complex harmonies. His personal mark was the import he gave to the tenor voice boh in vocal and instrumental music. Texts that he employed were of a comparatively cerebral or ethereal character and his rhtyhms were usually steady and peaceful. ~ Keith Johnson, All Music Guide

Richard Allison (fl. 1580-1610) - English composer of de la Tromba, a fine broken consort piece which has several professional recordings and first became well known due to the Julian Bream Consort.

He was known to be in the service of the Countess of Warwick in 1599, and then working for Sir John Scudamore. His publications are: The Psalms of David in Meter (1599), An Hour's Recreation in musicke, apt for instruments and voyces, (1606). His work also appears in Michael East's and Thomas Ravenscroft's psalters, and Thomas Morley's broken consort publication.
