Music Encyclopedia: Richard Mackenzie Bacon

(b Norwich, 1 May 1776; d Costessy, 27 Nov 1844). English writer on music. He was proprietor and later editor of a newspaper in Norwich, where he helped establish a triennial music festival. He founded and edited the Quarterly Musical Magazine and Review (London, 1818-30), the first English journal devoted exclusively to writing on music. A strong proponent of serious, all-sung English opera, he also produced two treatises on singing.
