Richard Benz

Benz, Richard (Reichenbach, 1884-1966, Heidelberg), spent his life in Heidelberg, where he studied Germanistik and philosophy before settling as an essayist, critic, and littérateur, whose main interest lay in the interplay between the arts, notably during the romantic age (see Romantik) which is central to many of his extensive publications. His aim was to establish the prevalent spirit of different cultural epochs, which during the romantic age derives from music: Die deutsche Romantik (1937) is his most influential, repeatedly republished work. He was a close friend of A. Mombert, the subject of his study Der Dichter Alfred Mombert (1947). Select editions of his works include Dem Geiste ein Haus (1977) and Wanderer zwischen den Zeiten (1983).
