Richard Caswell

Caswell, Richard (1729-89) Revolutionary War militia general and first governor of North Carolina, born in Baltimore County, Maryland. An effective wartime executive, Caswell devoted extraordinary effort to raising and equipping troops for the field. As major general of the state militia, he supported Gen. Horatio Gates at the disastrous Battle of Camden, South Carolina (1780).
