Delafield, Richard (1798-1873) army officer, born in New York City. Delafield worked on fortification projects for the defense of Hampton Roads, Virginia, supervised fortifications below New Orleans, and oversaw navigational improvements on the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. Delafield was twice superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy (1838-45; 1856-61), and was known for tightening discipline and for architectural and program improvements. Too old for active field duty during the Civil War, Delafield first served as an advisor to the New York state government on the mobilization of its volunteers and later as supervisor of coast defenses in New York Harbor.
