Biography

Cambridge graduate Richard Fraser cut his acting teeth at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. After accumulating credits on the London stage, he came to Hollywood, where he was signed to a 20th Century Fox contract and appeared in such British-localed films as Man Hunt, A Yank in the R.A.F., and How Green Was My Valley (all 1941). His American film career reached its peak with his performance as James Vane, the vengeful brother of the unfortunate Sybil Vane (Angela Lansbury) in The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945). Early life

After attending Cambridge University, Richard Fraser studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. Spending time as a London stage actor, Richard came to Hollywood before WWII, where he signed a contract with 20th Century Fox and appeared in several films.[1]

Career

His American film career reached its peak with his performance as James Vane, the vengeful brother of Sybil Vane in the film The Picture of Dorian Gray. Richard retired from acting in 1949, returning to England in 1961 with his then-wife, Actress Ann Gillis, spending his most of his last decade working for the BBC in export sales.[1]

Private life

Richard married actress Ann Gillis in 1952, and had a son by her.[2] After retiring from acting in 1949 Richard and Ann lived in England in the 1960s, Richard as a businessman, as Ann continued her acting career. The two divorced in 1970, two years prior to Richard's death due to cancer.[3]
