Richard Gilbert Scott
(1923– )
Son of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, he became a partner in the family firm in 1952. He is best-known for the Guildhall extension, City of London (1969–75—which includes the Library), and for the new Art Gallery (1988–2000), which completes his father's scheme for the forecourt of Guildhall. The Art Gallery employs the canted ‘arches’ so common in Egyptianizing work from the time of Piranesi, together with some fragmentary and angular Gothic tracery.
