Richard Ladd Kirkham (born 18 June 1955) is an American philosopher. Among his published works are Theories of Truth (MIT Press, 1992), "Does the Gettier Problem Rest on a Mistake?" Mind (1984. Vol.93, No.372), and "On Paradoxes and a Surprise Exam" Philosophia (1991). Kirkham graduated from Cornell College in 1977 and received his Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame in 1983.
Richard has a twin brother, William. The brothers were extremely mischievous as children, and were frequently at the root of sibling scuffles. When younger brother Jeff put his hand on a rusty nail on the playground, William reassured him that he would be fine; Richard informed Jeff that he would most assuredly be getting a shot, triggering a new cascade of panic in Jeff. On another occasion, William leaned out a second story window and dropped his glasses into a bush below; he fell out the window as he reached to catch them. Their mother, hearing the commotion, entered the room to see Richard leaning out dangerously far. She asked him what he was doing, and he replied calmly, "Looking for Bill." She realized with horror that William had gone out the window. Fortunately, he landed in the bush and was unharmed.[Anecdotes shared by Kaille Kirkham, Jeff's daughter.]
