Richard LaGravenese (born October 30, 1959) is an American screenwriter and occasional film director. He is best known as the writer of The Fisher King.

Personal life
LaGravenese was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of a taxi driver.[1] He graduated New York University Tisch School of the Arts, Experimental Theatre Program. He currently lives in Manhattan, NY on Central Park West with his daughter Lily and wife Ann.[citation needed][citation needed]
Career
LaGravenese wrote The Fisher King on spec in the late 1980's. It was acquired by Lynda Obst and Debra Hill's production company. They subsequently attracted Terry Gilliam to direct. The final film was a commercial hit, and brought LaGravenese an Academy Award nomination. It also secured his status as a premier screewriter and script doctor.
Since then, as can be seen by his filmography, he has worked exclusively on A-list projects for over a half-dozen Academy Award-winning film directors, including Jonathan Demme, Barbra Streisand, Robert Redford, Clint Eastwood and Stephen Soderbergh.

Future projects
Showtime is developing an hourlong drama from LaGravenese focused on an open marriage (think: Swingtown on pay cable). He will direct if the project goes to pilot. He'll also serve as an Executive Producer, along with Stacy Rukeyser ( "Crash"), Clark Peterson, Dennis Erdman and Alexandra Milchan.[2]
