Richard R. Tisei is the Minority Leader of the Massachusetts Senate, representing the Middlesex and Essex District. He is a member of the United States Republican Party.
Tisei's district includes Lynnfield, Malden, Melrose, Reading, Stoneham, and Wakefield. He is a 1981 graduate of American University. Prior to being elected to the Senate in 1990, he was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1985 until 1991.
Tisei is the longest serving Republican member of the Massachusetts Legislature making him the Dean of the GOP Delegation. He also holds the distinction of being the youngest Republican ever elected to the Massachusetts Legislature at age 22 in 1984.
Currently serving his tenth term as a senator, Tisei was elected Senate Minority Leader in January 2007. He had previously served as the Assistant Minority Leader since 1997.
On July 28, 2009, Tisei was named the campaign chair for Charlie Baker's 2010 gubernatorial run. On November 23, 2009, Baker named Tisei as his running mate, and thus as a candidate for Lieutenant Governor.[1]
Just prior to the announcement of Tisei as Baker's running mate, Tisei publicly disclosed that he is gay for the first time in an interview with the Boston Globe.[2] He is one of seven LGBT members of the Massachusetts General Court, alongside Senator Stan Rosenberg (D–Amherst) and Representatives Sarah Peake (D–Provincetown), Carl Sciortino (D–Medford), Kate Hogan (D–Stow), Cheryl Coakley-Rivera (D–Springfield) and Liz Malia (D–Jamaica Plain).
