Richard W. Hamming Medal or IEEE Richard W. Hamming Medal is an award given annually by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the international organization, for 'exceptional contributions to information sciences, information systems and information technology.' The award may be presented to an individual or group up to three.
The award was established by the IEEE Board of Directors in 1986. It is named to honor Dr. Richard W. Hamming, who has had a central role in the development of computer and computing science, and whose many significant contributions in the area of information science including his error-correcting codes.
Recipients of this award will receive a gold medal, bronze replica, certificate and honorarium.
