(b Boston, 19 Jan 1934). American composer. He studied at Brandeis and Mills College (under Kirchner). In 1968 he joined the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania. His works, in a dramatic, eclectic style, include ballets, chamber and choral music. Visions of Wonder and Terror (1977) for mezzo-soprano and orchestra won a Pulitzer Prize.
