An ancient and traditional pathway and communications route running along the top of a prominent ridge. The paths were not constructed as such and usually exploited a wide corridor. Some were later used as Roman roads and medieval droveways. In Britain the best-known ridgeways are: the Berkshire Ridgeway running eastwards from Avebury, the Icknield Way in the Chilterns, and the Pilgrim's Way on the North Downs of Kent.
