(Tibetan, Rin-chen bzang-po). One of the greatest Tibetan translators whose activities heralded the beginning of the Second Propagation or New School period in Tibet. Based in western Tibet, he made three visits to India where he spent over seventeen years in study. He is also credited with important cultural activities such as the dissemination of texts and the foundation of many temples and monasteries in western Tibet. In his later years he met Atiśa who praised his scholarly acumen, though the two scholars seem to have treated each other with reserve.
