The Rio Grande Valley Vipers are a team of the NBA Development League to begin play in 2007. They will play their home games at the Dodge Arena.
Former San Antonio Spurs star George "Iceman" Gervin has recently accepted a position as the team's Head of Basketball Operations. [1]
Former University of Texas-Pan American head coach Bob Hoffman has been named the team's head coach.
Recently the team announced they would be known as the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.[2] The logo and color scheme were unveiled on June 22, 2007. [3]
The team was hoping to be affiliated with the San Antonio Spurs, however, the Spurs chose to keep the Austin Toros as their D-League affiliate. The Vipers will be affiliated with the Houston Rockets, New Orleans Hornets, and Cleveland Cavaliers for 2007-08, but are holding out hope for a Spurs affiliation in the future. [4]
Draft
In the 2007 D-League expansion draft, the team selected Danilo (J.R.) Pinnock first overall. Pinnock, who starred at the George Washington University, was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2006 NBA Draft and played for the Arkansas RimRockers of the D-League that season. The team also selected Trent Strickland, Alfred Neale, Terrance Thomas, Clay Tucker, Nigel Dixon, Desmon Farmer, John Gilchrist, Joe Dabbert, and Milone Clark.[5]
