Rise of the Guardians, formerly titled The Guardians of Childhood and previously titled The Guardians, is an upcoming 3D computer-animated action-adventure comedy film which will be based on William Joyce's The Guardians of Childhood book series.[3] It will be produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Paramount Pictures, and is set for release on November 21, 2012.[4] The film stars Chris Pine, Isla Fisher, Hugh Jackman, Alec Baldwin, Jude Law and Dakota Goyo. It is being directed by Peter Ramsey and co-directed by Joyce,[5] the creator of Rolie Polie Olie, PBS Kids's George Shrinks, Fox's 2005 film Robots, and Disney's 2007 film Meet the Robinsons.

The film revolves around a group of guardians - Santa Claus (Alec Baldwin), Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman), The Sandman, and Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher) - joining forces along with Jack Frost (Chris Pine) when The Bogeyman (Jude Law) throws down the gauntlet, bringing the world into "total darkness" by inspiring nothing but fear into the hopes, beliefs, and imagination of children all over the world.
In 2005, Joyce and Reel FX launched a joint venture, Aimesworth Entertainments, to produce CG-animated feature films,[7] one of which was set to be The Guardians of Childhood,[8] but it never got realized.
In November 2009, it was revealed that Joyce was co-directing a feature film adaptation, then titled The Guardians, at DreamWorks.[9] The final title, Rise of the Guardians was announced in early 2011, along with the first cast.[5]
Originally, the film was set to be released on November 2, 2012, but DreamWorks Animation pushed the film to November 21, 2012 to avoid competition with Pixar's upcoming film Monsters University which had been pushed to November 2, 2012 to avoid competition with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.[4] Monsters University has now been pushed to June 21, 2013, with Wreck-It Ralph taking its place.[10]
Under distribution by Paramount Pictures and production by DreamWorks Animation, the film is scheduled for a November 21, 2012 release in American theaters. The film's first trailer was released on March 28, 2012[11] and later debuted with Titanic 3D.[citation needed]
A video game based on the film will be released by D3 Publisher sometime in December 2012, and it will allow gamers to lead the Guardians in their battle against Pitch.[12] It is set for release on the Nintendo Wii,[13] Xbox 360,[14] and the PlayStation 3.[15]
