A factor that can be measured to indicate the statistical or epidemiological probability of an adverse condition, effect or disease. Does not imply that it is a causative factor, nor that reversing the risk factor will reduce the hazard.

Elements that may contribute to or increase the risk to one’s health, economic stability, or personal and professional liability.

Any factor, environmental or organic, which has a strong association with the onset and progress of a disease or injury. Risk factors for hypokinetic diseases include poor diet, heavy smoking, an inactive lifestyle, and stress. See also cardiac risk factor.
