Fundamental management concerns include: the monitoring of precipitation, surface and groundwater quantity and quality, and sediment erosion, load, and transport, the stabilization of the channels, flood risk assessments, and flood control. The Senegal River Basin Development Authority (OMVS) is a successful example of international river basin management. Its principles are the recognition of the international status of the river by all the riparian states, and the equitable sharing of the development costs and benefits of a shared management programme.
