This Gaumont two-reeler was set somewhere in South Africa. A sinister-looking gentleman, bearing the credentials of a civil engineer, shows up at the doorstep of a wealthy plantation owner. The stranger immediately makes himself at home by making a pass at the owner's daughter. The plantation foreman suspects that the stranger is not who he seems to be, and he's right; the real civil engineer lies at the bottom of a river bed, murdered by the impostor. But before the foreman can expose the stranger as a fraud, he himself is framed on a murder charge. Ultimately, the "river's secret" is revealed in true "Curses! Foiled Again!" fashion. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
