In east-central TN, southwest of Oak Ridge; organized Nov 6, 1801 from Knox County and Indian lands. Name Origin: For Archibald Roane (1759-1819), governor of TN (1801-03) and judge of the TN supreme court (1815-19).

Roane County is a county of the U.S. state of Tennessee (TN), United States. Its population was 51,910 at the 2000 United States census. Its county seat is at Kingston[1]. The U.S. Census Bureau treats Roane County as the Harriman, Tennessee, Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is a component of the Knoxville-Sevierville-La Follette, TN, Combined Statistical Area. Several movies have been filmed in Roane County, including Boys of Summerville, and October Sky.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 395 square miles (1,020 km2), of which 361 square miles (930 km2) is land and 34 square miles (88 km2) (8.61%) is water.

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 51,910 people, 21,200 households, and 15,242 families residing in the county. The population density was 144 people per square mile (56/km²). There were 23,369 housing units at an average density of 65 per square mile (25/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 95.24% White, 2.71% Black or African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 1.23% from two or more races. 0.69% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 21,200 households out of which 28.60% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.30% were married couples living together, 10.10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.10% were non-families. 25.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.20% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.87.

In the county, the population was spread out with 22.30% under the age of 18, 7.50% from 18 to 24, 26.90% from 25 to 44, 27.20% from 45 to 64, and 16.10% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 94.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $33,226, and the median income for a family was $41,399. Males had a median income of $32,204 versus $22,439 for females. The per capita income for the county was $18,456. About 10.30% of families and 13.90% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.80% of those under age 18 and 13.80% of those age 65 or over.
